finalised booklet for hand in

Got critique's from class members and tutors today about my booklet in class today. I plan on implementing the majority of their ideas tonight and printing it off for presentation and hand in tomorrow. Overall I feel my booklet conveys the ideas I was trying to express. In saying that I also think it could do with a lot more development just to make it more interesting. If I had more time on the project I would revisit my key imagery and work on making the whole booklet more fluid and inviting.

changes to booklet

I made changes to my draft booklet and re-printed it. I much prefer it now but it still doesn't quite work for me.

Draft booklet

Printed out the first draft of my booklet with all 12 pages completed. It took me several attempts at printing and the final print that did work was very pixelated so that's something I need to fix. Other than the printing I feel the booklet itself needs more fine tuning before its in a presentable state. The text also needs work, I feel like it is currently too big and takes away from the image too much.

Main spread mock ups

I made the mock ups for my 3 main spreads using the draft images and text I created earlier. I think the text and the images don't go together to well right now. I need to continue working on improving the overall look of these mock ups so they don't look so disconnected.

Week 4 Draft text

I wrote up the drafts for my 3 main spreads.
I want them to be informative about the experience as possible given the low word count so I've tried to talk a little bit about everything. From the locations ascetic quality's to the overall feel and atmosphere.

The Embassy
The Embassy is a movie theatre located at the eastern end of Courtenay Place Under the shadow of Mount Victoria. It was originally built in 1924 and has under gone a series of remodels and changes. Though the aesthetic of the building has stayed roughly the same. While most modern theatres aim for a more streamlined and casual experience for the average movie goer, The Embassy strives for elegance and class. The architecture of the building is very classical with marble staircases and a huge glass chandelier in the centre of the building. Going to The Embassy to see a film feels like much more of an event, its something to look forward to and get dressed up for.

The Reading Cinema
Reading Cinema is located at 100 Courtenay Place. The $23m complex contains shops, restaurants and a ten-screen multiplex cinema. The 8,000 m² development links Courtenay Place with the waterfront and was designed to complement the existing character of the strip. This project won the 2003 Property Council NZ Entertainment Excellence Award. The Reading cinema is a more standard movie viewing experience, The theatre itself is very sleek and streamlined with not much to look at in the way of architecture. The Reading is more of a casual experience compared places like The Embassy, if you don’t feel like getting too dressed up and just want to sit back and watch a movie with some friends then The Reading is the theatre for you.

The Lighthouse Cuba
Light House Cuba is located in Wellington's bustling Cuba street district. Nestled on Wigan street, across from Havana bar. The Light House tries to create an environment of comfort and sophistication to deliver a unique cinema experience. Its kind of the middle ground between The Embassy and The Reading, while it may not be as elegant as The Embassy it does does give off a feeling of class and sophistication. The Lighthouse is also a lot smaller than the other two theatres so it never feels to crowded, the atmosphere is far more relaxed and personal. At the Lighthouse you're not just one of a hundred there to see a film, you're an individual and the staff treat you as one.

Week 3 design mock ups

I started work on the 3 images for my main spread, I'm struggling a bit to make each of them interesting and stand alone as designs and still work well as a series. I've tried to connect them together using images that apply to all three locations. I've mainly just used the cinema screen and seats as the focal point for my images then added the colour pallet and textures of each location to the background of my designs. I'll keep working on improving them and making them more cohesive moving forward.

Quick compositions

I tried recreating the style of the artist models I chose using enlarged textures from each of my locations. They are only quick compositions so they are still very rough. I like that they give a good idea of each locations colour pallet. There is a good chance I'll take some of what I learnt here into my final design.

Week 3 research artist models

I found these images of texture laid over the top of each other to create these very simple but beautiful designs. I really like this style if design and would like to experiment with this idea using the textures I've photographed

Lighthouse Photos

There wasn't much to photograph at the light house because its so small, so I mainly tried to focus on the textures in the environment and found some pretty cool ones I think.

Favourites from the Embassy

A few photos of the embassy.
I really like how polished and clean everything looks and I think ill try to capture this in my design

Favourite photos from Reading Cinema

These are just some of the photos I took of the Reading Cinema

week 2 research

I went to all three of my locations and took several photos that highlight key aspects of the locations themselves.

I focused on significant parts of the architecture for each location. Like the large pillars in the embassy or the escalator and circular railing at the Reading.

I also took photos of the different textures found at my locations like the carpets, walls and de-core.

First weeks research

I've decided the theme of my pamphlet will be cinema's around Wellington, I have chosen the Reading Cinema, The Embassy and the lighthouse. I believe that each deliver a different experience while still providing the same function.

So far I have only been to Reading Cinema this week to see a film, I saw kings man and really enjoyed the theatre experience as a whole. The theatre as a whole isn't very luxurious, its just a very standard mall theatre with the usual soda and popcorn candy bar. Compared to the Embassy's restaurant and bar its a bit lacklustre. On the plus side it is $2.50 cheaper than the Embassy for tickets  which is nice.
